'I want to get rid of the disabled from this world': knifeman goes on rampage at care centre near Tokyo, hacking at least 19 people to death

Television footage showed a number of ambulances parked outside the facility, with medics and other rescue workers running in and out

The attacker went into the centre (pictured) in Sagamihara, outside of Tokyo, brandishing a knife at around 2.30am local time. Police were called to the scene after residents saw a man armed with a knife in the grounds of the Tsukui Yamayuri Garden. Asahi Shimbun reported that the suspect was quoted by police as saying 'I want to get rid of the disabled from this world.' National state

broadcaster NHK reported that 15 people have died and 45 were injured - of which four are in a serious condition. Kyodo News agency reported that 19 people are dead. Armed police encircled the centre which offers support to people with disabilities, including proving creative and rehabilitation activities. Officers arrested a man, 26, on suspicion of murder when he came into a police station and said: 'I did it'.
