UNILAG Resumption: Students’ compliance with conditions impresses school management

  For several decades, policy makers and observers warned that Nigeria’s continued dependence on oil as the mainstay of her economy was bound to jeopardize her long term economic growth and development. International financial institutions, development partners and knowledgeable experts at home were all in agreement that our overreliance on crude oil was an unsustainable strategic weakness. Between 1973 and 1978, during the oil boom, oil revenue rose quickly to more than 90 percent of Nigeria’s revenue. This increase was matched by an increase in public expenditure which quadrupled between 1973 and 1975.[1] Prior to the war, regions had run tax-based economies and enabled growth by leveraging comparative advantage largely in agriculture.

Innovation, change key to national development- Osinbajo



Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday identified innovation and change as key to attaining the developmental aspirations of the country. He said this in his keynote speech at a development roundtable, `The Platform’, held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. He said there were plans to pay bursary awards to 100 science, technology and mathematics students from 2016 and establish an innovation fund to support research and product development and commercialisation activities. He said significant resources were provided in the 2016 budget to enable innovation experts have easy access to fund.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has filed another application to disqualify Danladi Umar, the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, from continuing to preside over his trial.

Ajibola Oluyede, a counsel to Mr. Saraki, who is being tried for alleged false and anticipatory assets declaration, filed the application shortly after the trial resumed on Wednesday morning.

The governing council of the University of Jos has selected Sebastian Maimako to take over from Heyward Mafuyai as vice chancellor of the university.

The selection followed the termination of the tenure of Mr. Mafuyai on April 21.

The Principal Assistant Registrar in charge of Information and Publication of the university, Abdullahi Abdullahi, said in a statement on Friday that the decision was taken at 12th Governing Council meeting of the university.

The management of the University of Ibadan has closed the institution, ordering students to proceed on a long vacation after a protest by students over poor supply of electricity and water in halls of residence.

This has added to the growing number of universities recently closed down due to students’ unrest.

A circular issued by the management of the institution on Tuesday directed students to leave their halls of residence and proceed on a long vacation, while suspending academic activities till further notice.
