BREAKING NEWS: Father and his two children fight for life after being struck by lightning in UK

'It was like the world was ending': At least three people are injured by lightning strikes

At least three people have been injured by lightning strikes after severe storms brought flash flooding and thundery downpours to the UK - marking an abrupt end to the recent sunny spell. Cars were left submerged in residential streets today (left in Wallington, south London) and houses set ablaze by lightning strikes (inset in Stoke Newington, north London) as heavy rain, hail and lightning swept in from the west. A father and his two children - a boy and a girl - were struck by lightning in Northern
Ireland this afternoon and remain at Belfast Children's Hospital where they are being treated for burn injuries. Homes in Stoke Newington, North London, and in Midlothian, Scotland, also caught alight after being struck by a bolt of lightning as heavy downpours moved in across much of the UK this afternoon. Large swathes of Britain had been enjoying balmy temperatures well into the mid-twenties until lunchtime, but the recent humidity sparked a surge of thunderstorms and lightning strikes by mid-afternoon.
